Reader's letter: Free cycling in community
As a cyclist , as are lots of Newark and Sherwood residents, I am assisted by cycling routes already provided from village to village by Sustrans and Newark and Sherwood District Council, at no cost to the community, allowing us to enjoy the freedom and safety these tracks provide.
I was so impressed to see the YMCA are sourcing funding (as a non-profit charity) to provide the area with an amazing cycling facility (Improvements To Cycling Move Up A Gear, Advertiser, February 23) which, as the original BMX track was lost to building homes, Active For You and the YMCA , it is a much-needed facility to “enrich the lives of young people in the local area,” as Mr Todd Cauthorn quoted in your recent article.
I am so encouraged that someone has embraced this vital need for the community.
As a non-profit charity that has established itself locally and, as all the activities can be reached by local people without the use of transport, it would be a great initiative for the YMCA to provide free, unlimited passes for local children to use the new cycle facility free of charge as they lost there free BMX track.
So, Mr Cauthorn, consider this for the good of the local community.
Maybe more economical use of artificial lighting ( flood lights included) could be a good use of funding for these passes .
Free cycle passes for local children is the community way to go YMCA, enriching the lives of young people in the area” as you say, Mr Cauthorn. — K. JARMAN, Fernwood.
