Friends of 50 years come together for reunion with Australian classmate
A group of friends who left school more than 50 years ago and meet regularly were joined by a former classmate from Australia.
They left the former Lilley and Stone Girls’ High School, Newark, in 1968, and will all be 68 this year or next.
The women were joined at the latest of their regular get-togethers by Pat Jones (nee Williams), who now lives south of Perth.
Pat emigrated in 1986, but returns to England every few years to visit family.
It was the first time she had caught up with the group.
They had lunch at the Lord Ted, shared memories, and reminisced over newspaper cuttings, photographs and postcards.
They all recalled their old headmistress, Miss Dibb.
“If she walked in here now, I’m sure we’d all stand up automatically. That’s what you did when she came in the room,” said Carolyn Meyer.
Another member of the group, Peggy Bottomore, said she vividly recalled going to buy her school gym slip from Randalls.
Carol Bryan said:“We might be getting on a bit in years but we remain young at heart.”
