Future Olympic champions could benefit from facilities at YMCA activity village, off Lord Hawke Way, Newark
Future Olympic champions could benefit from the town’s new sports facilities, according to a district councillor.
As part of the next stage of work at the YMCA activity village, off Lord Hawke Way, Newark, a new climbing wall will be installed.
Andy Hardy, community projects manager at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said the climbing wall would be of an Olympic and international standard.
District councillor Jonno Lee said: “This is very, very exciting for all of Newark and Sherwood.
“We will soon have some of the best, if not the best rock climbing facilities in the country, if not Europe, and I hope that the people of Newark and Sherwood have prime time usage of it.
“In other areas, I know Olympians are given prime-time slots.
“I don’t think that will happen here so it is very exciting.
“Hopefully, we will see the next Olympic champion coming from the town.”
Rock climbing is a sport which has risen in popularity in recent years and will be included in the next Olympic Games.
