GALLERY: Torrential downpour across Newark causes flooding and burst river banks

Fire crews rescued 70 sheep from flooded farmland at Sutton-on-Trent on Monday as the heavy rain of recent weeks began to take its toll on the area.

Firefighters from Newark, Tuxford and Highfields, Nottingham, used power boats to rescue the animals after they became marooned on an island when the River Trent burst its banks.

Tuesday saw a flood warning issued for Newark as river levels rose, swelled by rain water draining from the land further upstream.
