It was a night full of entertainment, patriotism and deep pockets.

The twelfth annual Newark Patriotic Fund ball took place in the Cedric Ford Pavilion at Newark Showground on Saturday evening.

The fund supports wounded and mentally-scarred serving and ex-Forces personnel and their families in the Advertiser area.

There were strong demonstrations of patriotism through the singing of Jerusalem, which was accompanied by the waving of the Union flag and the National Anthem.

Many veterans attended the event.

In his address, the chairman of the fund, Keith Girling, commended the work of all of those connected to the fund, all of whom are volunteers.

He said that fund drop-in sessions could be attended by upward of 30 people needing support.

He also highlighted the recent partnership with the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, which is newly-created at Stanford Hall, Nottinghamshire.

And he said that while the fund had the chance to become a national charity, a decision had been taken to stay true to its roots so that all of the money raised locally, was spent locally.

The ball is the biggest fundraiser that the fund organises.

It was a well-attended event with the entertainment provided by Newark three-piece band The Business, as well as Suzka: The Greatest Showgirl, aka Susie Chambers.

As well as drinks on arrival and a three-course meal, the ball included a raffle and auction, both of which were fantastically supported by the cash of those present.

A gin bar was open throughout the evening, while Ann et Vin provided the wine.

The night was compered by a team from Vodafone who were also on hand to ensure everything went according to plan.
