Three teams tied at the top after the first round of the annual Newark Schools Chess Competition.
Two teams from Barnby Road and a Highfields team scored nine points with Sutton-on-Trent close behind on 8.5 points.
Six schools took part in the competition, which was held at John Blow School, Collingham.
They were Barnby Road, Bishop Alexander, Highfields, Holy Trinity, John Blow and Sutton-on-Trent.
It was the first time that Bishop Alexander had entered.
A total of 64 children took part in the event, comprising 16 teams of four players, with each child playing three games.
Nine children won all three games and they were each presented with medals by Alastair Millar from the competition sponsors Tallents solicitors.
The event was controlled by John Crawley, head of junior chess for Nottinghamshire.
Two more rounds will take place, in March and May next year.
The scores from these two events will be added to the first round results to decide the overall winner.
The team from Holy Trinity were the winners of the event last year.
