It was announced at the Sam White Legacy Gala Dinner that the John O’Groats to Land’s End cycle ride raised £215,355

There was spontaneous applause as it was revealed that a charity bike ride massively exceeded its financial target, allowing for even more research to assist children with brain tumours.

Organisers of the End2End Challenge took the opportunity of the Sam White Legacy Gala Dinner to reveal that the ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End, which had a target of £100,000, but actually raised £215,355.

The ride supplements the work of the Sam White Legacy. Included in the 12 riders who biked throughout was Sam’s father Mike, who founded the legacy with his late wife Pam.

They were riding in support of young people with cancer, as were eight more who joined on various legs and the four-strong support team that helped throughout.

They were all welcomed to the stage at the Cedric Ford Pavilion, Newark Showground, to hear the news.

The 1,060-mile ride was 14 days, and included a stop at Sam’s old school, Newark Academy.

The legacy was set-up following Sam’s death in 2013, aged 16, after a battle with a brain tumour.

Despite his diagnosis, he was determined to live a fulfilling life, and worked tirelessly to raise awareness of his condition in young people.

Professor Sir David Greenaway, who came up with the idea for the ride, recapped it and a video montage was shown.

Mike said: “We have confirmed financial support to some projects. Everything we do is to support spreading the good word of research and creating a better future for children with brain tumours.”

Each table had a sporting personality, in keeping with Sam’s great love for sport.

£22,680 from charity Star Trust to pay for a vital piece of medical equipment was confirmed on the night.
