GCSE results: Sir William Robertson Academy, Welbourn, celebrates student grades this summer after exams cancelled due to coronavirus
Students from Sir William Robertson Academy in Welbourn are celebrating their GCSE results this summer, with many being awarded grades 9, 8 and 7 across several subjects.
With exams cancelled for the first time in history due to the coronavirus pandemic, schools were asked to use their professional experience to make a fair judgement of the grades they believed students would have achieved — had they sat their exams.
Thomas Wilkinson, of Balderton, did exceptionally well, achieving the top grade 9 in biology, chemistry, geography and physics as well as grade 8 in computer science, English language, English literature and French. He was awarded a grade 7 in maths and grade 5 in additional maths.
Amelia Thompson, of Carlton-le-Moorland, also received fantastic results, achieving grade 9 in history and graphics; grade 8 in English
language, English literature, maths and art and design; grade 7 in double science and grade 6 in additional maths and French.
Awarded grade 9s in maths were Thomas Cooknell of Welbourn, Peter Wynn-Jones of Brant Broughton and Aum Keshvala of Navenby; with Thomas and Aum also achieving grade 9s in computer science and biology respectively.
Matthew Calder, of Navenby, received a grade 9 in computer science as well as four grade 8s, two grade 6s and two grade 4s.
Francesca Whitelaw, of Witham St Hughs, secured three grade 8s, two grade 7s and three grade 6s; with Matthew Warrilow, of Bassingham, achieving four grade 8s, four grade 7s and two grade 6s.
Jenny Chen, of Newark — who achieved an A* in GCSE Chinese in 2017 when she was in Year 8 — was awarded grade 8 in English language, English literature, history and performing arts; grade 7 in double science, maths and sports studies and grade 6 in French.
Both securing grade 9s in French were Leah McLernon of Barnby-in-the-Willows and Isabelle Stevenson of Newark.
Isabelle also achieved two grade 7s and six grade 6s. Leah gained two grade 8s, three grade 7s, two grade 6s and an A* in the CACHE Level 2 award in child development and care.
Talented performer Saffron Simpson, of Newark — who has appeared at every school show since joining the academy in 2015 — was delighted to receive grade 9 in performing arts.
Most of these students will be joining the academy’s sixth form, which last week celebrated its A-level results and the success of its first Oxbridge student.
85 of the current GCSE cohort are expected to move into Year 12 to study A-level and BTEC courses, and will be joined by eight students from other schools in what has been a bumper year for enrolment.
Head Mark Guest said: “I am delighted that the hard work and the ability of each of our students has been properly recognised in this year’s GCSE results and we are looking at record numbers joining our growing sixth form.
"Despite being denied the opportunity to sit their exams, students now have the grades to take them forward to the next stages of their lives — whether employment or for the majority further study — with real confidence.
"I couldn’t be happier for all of our students and their families, these results were richly deserved.”
The school is driven by the aim to aspire, with the ethos directing the work of all staff and pupils.
In recent years it has become one of the most sought-after schools in Lincolnshire, with parents recognising the benefits of choosing a very successful school in a safe, rural setting with superb pastoral care.
The continued growth and success of the Sixth Form means that parents are confident that their children will achieve well as they continue their education in this supportive environment with high academic results.
The school is located between the villages of Welbourn and Leadenham, and offers comprehensive education for 11-18 year olds. It is easily accessible from Newark, Grantham, Sleaford, North Hykeham and Witham St Hughs, with school buses serving each of these areas.
