Major changes planned to the forecourt at Newark Northgate railway station have been approved.

A new entrance and exit will be created to the main station carpark, which means the current carpark exit across the station forecourt will be closed.

The carpark will be arranged to allow for a single traffic lane to be created with vehicles moving in a clockwise direction.

A pedestrian-only route will be created to the station building entrance linking with footpaths on adjoining roads and providing a pedestrian route to the carpark.

Benches and flower beds are proposed for the area, which is currently occupied by the carpark entrance.

An existing planted island in the centre of the station forecourt will be removed to provide a one-way route for vehicles with four drop-off parking spaces, eight short-stay parking spaces with one disabled space, and a new taxi rank with three spaces.

There will also be an area for buses.

The application, which was approved by Newark and Sherwood District Council planning committee, also includes improved facilities for cyclists with a cycle storage area and changing-room being provided.

The application was submitted by Virgin Trains East Coast.
