Golf club names Newark Emmaus Trust as charity of the year
The Newark Emmaus Trust has been chosen by Newark Golf Club to be its charity of the year for 2022.
Nicola Burley, chief executive of the trust, said: “I am thrilled and delighted with this news. It is a great honour for the trust and we look forward to working with Newark Golf Club on fundraising activities.
“I recently met with the club’s captain, Howard Roberts and Rock Hastings, seniors’ captain, to discuss the ways in which our partnership will be mutually beneficial over the coming year. I am looking forward to working with him.”
Newark Golf Club has been welcoming golfers since 1901, and the course has evolved over the years to the challenging course that it is today.
Club captain Howard Roberts said: “It is a long tradition of the club that the captain nominates a local charity to support for a 12- month period. I recently visited the Newark Emmaus Trust and was very impressed at the work carried out with the young homeless people of the Newark area.
“The trust helps young homeless people in the area to find housing, gain skills and mitigate the risk of the homelessness cycle. I am keen to raise as much as we can for this very worthwhile cause.”
Fundraising events planned for the coming year include race evenings and raffles.
Newark Emmaus Trust provides accommodation, support and training for homeless young people aged 16 to 25, including pregnant teenagers, young parents and their babies. All accommodation is in Newark and includes shared houses for young people of the same gender, shared houses for young people of mixed gender, self-contained flats and houses for parents and their babies or family units, and is fully-furnished and ready to occupy.
An agency can refer a young person for an interview and the project also takes self-referrals.
