Health Secretary Sajid Javid to hold coronavirus press conference today as cases increase

The Health Secretary is expected to hold a coronavirus press conference at 5pm today (Wednesday), as covid infections continue to soar.

Sajid Javid will be presenting the first government press conference on covid-19 in several weeks.

It is expected he will encourage vaccine boosters — rather than announcing the government's plan B which could enforce face coverings, vaccine passports and working from home.

This comes as concerns grow about the rising coronavirus infection rates.

In Newark and Sherwood, there have been 591 recorded positive cases in the past week (October 19 figures) and a total of 224 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Nationally there has been a 16.1% increase in positive cases, and a 10% rise in hospital admissions.

There has also been a 14.6% rise in coronavirus deaths across the UK.
