Dr Crookes was born on April 10 1935.

He trained at West Minister Hospital in London where he met his wife, Hazel, as she was training to be a nurse.

They had four children, James, Claire, Edward and the late Anthony.

The couple moved to the care home in October last year.

A spokesman at the care home said: “Peter loved to join in any activities at Kings Court, but his favourite thing to do was going out daily on his motor scooter for fresh air.

“He often talked about his wife, Hazel, referring to her as the love of his life.”

Dr Crookes also dedicated his life to many organisations, including St John Ambulance.

As an Honorary Doctor to the Newark and Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society, he was recognised by his Mayor's Citizens Award for Community Service when he retired in 1997.

His son, James, said: "We have been touched by the huge number of tributes from those who knew him.

“He will be fondly remembered as a true gentleman and sorely missed.”

A memory book is available at the care home for people to sign, which will be later given to his family.
