A communications firm that is leading the way in its industry is preparing to open a £5m data centre.

Timico, of Newark, is in the final construction phase of the 18,000sq ft centre, dubbed an internet factory, which will be officially opened this month.

The centre, behind its offices on Beacon Hill Office Park, will provide two 2,000sq ft data halls where customers can securely store vast amounts of virtual data, including websites, databases and email servers.

There are only 50 other centres of its kind in the country, mainly in London and along the M4 corridor.

The initial £5m investment will be followed by a further £2m in the coming years to increase its capacity.

Timico’s chief technology officer, Mr Trefor Davies, said they were one of the few companies in the industry that were growing and investing.

“Because the business is doing well and it is an exciting place to be, with exciting projects, we are finding it easier to attract investors and good quality staff,” he said.

“People want to be part of a growing business.”

The firm’s marketing director, Mr Neil Armstrong, said their growth was attracting a lot of interest at a time when other firms had adopted a mentality of battening down the hatches.

He said they had launched innovative products no other communications service providers were offering.

One of their services allows businesses to make credit card transactions via a mobile phone connection in the event of their broadband failing, potentially saving them millions of pounds.

“That is leading edge in our industry,” said Mr Davies.

He said Newark was a great place to do business.

The firm has increased its workforce to more than 200 after beginning with just four people at Langford Hall in 2004.

Since then Timico has been named by the Sunday Times as one of the fastest growing technical companies in the UK, with 19,000 business customers, including Honda and BP.

It has set up a new small and medium business sales team to attract more customers from the region, and existing teams have been expanded.

The company’s growth is being managed in a sustainable way with a gradual increase in the size of the business.

Last year its turnover was £24m. This year it is expected to be £30-£35m and next year it could be about £45m.

In the next four years turnover is expected to be £100m, with a workforce of about 350.

Timico was named Business Of The Year at the Advertiser’s 2011 Newark Business Awards at Kelham Hall.
