A dentist in Southwell shaved his head for charity after being cast as a character who suffers from leukaemia in Newark’s Argent Theatre production of the Calendar Girls.

Mr Alistair Dobb, 47, a dentist at the Minster Dental Centre on Lower Kirklington Road, decided on drastic action after being cast as John Clarke, whose death from leukaemia in the play sparks the idea of the calendar.

He said: “I have been hairy for a long time, and I have never before shaved it like this.

“The bald wig I was wearing in rehearsals looked like a swimming cap so I decided to shave my hair and give any money I raised from it and the play to Beaumond House Community Hospice.

“My patients are very much looking forward to seeing the end result.”

Mr Dobb’s wife, Sarah, volunteered to cut her husband’s hair on Friday.

Mr Dobb said: “I had a chat with my best mate and he said I should definitely go for it.

“Whether or not it improves my performance remains to be seen.”

The Calendar Girls is at The Grove School’s Lilley and Stone site, London Road, Newark, until Saturday at 7.30pm.

Tickets are available from the Argent Theatre box office on 01636 679000 or in person at Beaumond House charity shops in Newark and Southwell.
