A community first responder has been recognised for his life-saving contribution by the British Heart Foundation.

Mr Malcolm Kirk, 73, of Raysmith Close, Southwell, was invited to the charity's Heart Hero Awards 2016 in Birmingham.

He was nominated by a member of Mr Roland Malkin's family, who he helped when the father suffered a cardiac arrest at the family home back in September 2014.

Mr Kirk was the first on the scene four minutes later and gave Mr Malkin life-saving treatment using a defibrillator before paramedics arrived to carry our advanced clinical treatment.

He is a member of Southwell Community First Responders, and while on shift he sits with a pager ready to respond to emergencies.

The nomination read: "I always thought the ambulance was the only call with patients. I was quite surprised when Malcolm was on our doorstep.

"When the ambulance personnel arrived soon after, they appeared quite amazed with my father's condition given the medical emergency he had just suffered.

"Malcolm did what he needed to do with the kit available and managed to restart my father's heart using the defibrillator.

"He reacted calmly and with skill, helping to calm the nerves of a highly distressed family at the same time.

"Since then, my father and Malcolm have seen each other on a number of occasions and both have been keen to support and publicise the activities of the other.”
