Helping grandmother’s dream to walk again
A fun day to raise money towards prosthetics for a woman who lost both her legs was said to be a huge success.
Family and friends of Lisa Fryer, 50, of the Hawtonville estate, Newark, started the campaign to buy latex prosthetic legs to help her realise her dream of walking her grandchildren to school.
The event, including cake sales, stalls, a bouncy castle, and food, raised £733.
Mrs Fryer said: "There were so many people there.
"I was ecstatic with how many people turned up and how the community has pulled together.
"My friend did an amazing job and put so much effort into organising the day.
"It went well and everyone enjoyed it."
A relative of Mrs Fryer raised £1,390 from a raffle and the fundraising total now stands at £3,800.
Another relative is planning to do a skydive, hoping to add a further £1,000.
The initial target of £4,000 is within sight, but Mrs Fryer is hoping to keep going so she can get a higher standard of prosthetics, which cost up to £7,000.
"I will have money for my legs by the end of the year," she said.
"There is still some way to go but we have raised so much already."
The next fundraising event is an auction night at the Old Malt Shovel pub, Newark, on Saturday, September 29.
Mrs Fryer underwent a double leg amputation a week following her 50th birthday after fighting peripheral arterial disease.
She is currently confined to a bed in her living room.
