High winds bring disruption

Winds of up to 60mph continue to batter the area.

More than 50 calls were received from the public at the Nottinghamshire Police control room reporting fallen trees, express concern about high-sided vehicles blowing dangerously in the wind, and road blockages caused by items strewn about.

The weather is set to improve shortly, but motorists are advised at this time to only travel where necessary and to expect some delays across the county.

Train travel has been severely disrupted on both the East Coast and East Midlands lines.

East Midlands Trains are running a normal timetable today, but routes have been delayed between Lincoln Central and Newark Northgate because of obstructions on the line.

Trains from Newcastle towards London, running through Newark Northgate, are running to an amended timetable with extended journey times.

Anyone travelling from Newark to beyond Newcastle is affected as all trains are currently suspended and no alternative transport is available.

There are currently no services through Doncaster because of damage to the station.

On the roads, the A1 southbound has re-opened now as a high-sided vehicle which overturned at North Muskham at 1.30pm has been removed.

Strong winds brought down trees or branches at Newark Road, Worksop Road and Forest Road, Ollerton, Normanton Road, Upton, Eagle Road, Spalford, Epperstone Road, Oxton, the A614 Old Rufford Road, Rufford, Kirklington Road, near St Andrew's Church, Eakring, Station Road, Sutton-on-Trent, and London Road, Balderton.

A tree came down near the Beehive Inn, Main Street, Maplebeck, blocking the road and bringing down BT lines.

In each instance the damage was assessed and dealt with by emergency response teams from the county council highways department.

Nottinghamshire County Council tweeted at around 1.30pm that all of its recycling centres had to close due to safety concerns as a result of high winds.

It also said Rufford Park closed at 12.30pm.
