Reader's letter: Historic concerns
I have lived in Newark all my life and been proud of our market town.
I have seen lovely buildings pulled down and some ugly ones put up in their place and then those knocked down because they haven't lasted.
I now wonder what is happening to the town.
I had a friend from Australia to visit and we went for lunch on Saturday. When we walked back about 2.30pm we came up Stodman Street where most of the shops were closed. We walked into Market Place where the stalls had packed up.
The Governor's House is empty now and I expect it will go the same way as what used to be the Nottingham Building Society.
Tourists used to come to Newark to take photos of the buildings but there soon won't be any to take, except perhaps the flats behind the old M&S building, and, of course, Asda.
I do know other town have a lot of empty shops but most take care of their historic buildings. — S. BRADSHAW, Newark.
