Homes evacuated as huge fire takes hold in a field

Homes were evacuated and the main road into a village shut due to a huge fire in a field today.

Firefighters have battling the blaze, which has destroyed a whole field of crops.

Police evacuated some properties on Station Road, Orston, and officers closed Station Road at its junctions with the A52 at Elton-on-the-Hill and in the village itself.

Thick smoke was seen billowing across the road.

It is understood the fire is now under control and homes have been spared.

The smoke can be seen as far away as Bottesford and billowed into gardens in Orston itself.

The field affected runs parallel to Orston and Elton Train Station, midway between Orston and Elton, and is also close to the solar farm.

The incident is ongoing.
