RAF Balderton : Hoping to find out more about gunner

A man whose uncle was killed on a sortie to Lutzendorf from RAF Balderton is hoping to visit the crash site to find out more about his uncle and comrades.

Clive Cook contacted the RAF Balderton Research Group and visited the airfield with his wife, Julie Cook, on Remembrance Sunday.

His uncle, Flight Sergeant Ray Wells, was killed on the sortie on March 14 1945 while serving as a mid-upper gunner on Lancaster PA214 9J-P in 227 Squadron.

Clive and Julie are hoping to visit the site where the plane crashed to find out more about his uncle and those who served with him.

Clive brought his late uncle's medals and photos including one of him, his crew and aircraft, nicknamed Polly Peppermint.

He and Julie joined members of the research group as they laid poppies at RAF Balderton and a poignant poem written by former mid-upper gunner Sergeant Don Bennett from 227 Squadron.
