Mr Roy Briggs-Price had to swim to reach three miniature horses in a field off the A46 Newark bypass in the early hours of Monday.

After being alerted by a friend who lives on Kelham Road, Mr Briggs-Price (62) of Millgate, moved the horses further along the field to an area not so badly affected by flooding.

Mr Briggs-Price had earlier rescued another six horses, when water reached about 4ft high, just off Kelham Road and opposite Newark Rugby Club.

He moved these horses to an area off Beacon Heights, with the help of his son, Mr Rene Briggs-Price (30) of Parliament Street.

Mr Adrian Lowe (37) of Sutton Avenue, who owns one of the horses, and Mr Shane Thompson (19) of Friars Crescent, who works for Mr Roy Briggs-Price, also helped.

Mr Briggs-Price said the flood water normally started coming from the direction of the sugar beet factory but this time it came from Farndon.

“It came up overnight. We went in up to our waists to get them out,” he said.
