Firefighters from Tuxford and Retford Fire Station attended a house fire in Judes Park, East Markham

Firefighters have attended a house fire that was caused by Christmas decorations.

Crews from Tuxford and Retford attended the incident in Judes Park, East Markham and are now urging people to take extra during the festive period.

Decorative bunting and Christmas stockings were hung close to a log burner, which was lit at the time. The heat had radiated, causing the fire and aiding it to rapidly spread.

The residents, two adults and two children, had working smoke alarms in their property which alerted them to the fire and enabled them to get out and call 999.

The fire service turned up and the fire was extinguished, however, there was still a lot of smoke in the property and issuing out of the property.

The crews used two Breathing Apparatus to carry out precautionary checks and Positive Pressure Ventilation was used to assist with smoke clearance.

Watch Manager Lloyd said: "Thankfully the residents escaped this fire unharmed, however, there could have been a much worse outcome.

"This incident shows the importance of having working smoke alarms in your home - we advise that you have one on every floor of your property, that these are tested regularly, and replaced every ten years.

"We want our communities to stay safe this Christmas, so please follow our safety advice, however, we are here for you, and your families, in an emergency."

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service advised to not attach decorations to lights or heaters, to never place candles near the Christmas tree or materials that can catch light easily and not not overload electrical sockets.

They also advised to switch off all appliances when not being used and before going to bed, including Christmas lights and to make sure that all electrical products are bought by a reputable retailer and have a British or European safety mark.
