Hoval Ltd, based on Northgate, Newark, ceases manufacturing

More than 100 years of heating engineering has come to an end in Newark as the UK branch of an international company has ceased production.

Hoval Ltd established its UK branch in Newark in 1958, and purchased the Farrar boiler works in 1961. Farrar had been founded in Newark in 1887 and supplied boilers and heating equipment to the across the British Empire.

The company’s UK manufacturing has been based on the original Farrar site in Newark ever since, but is has now been announced that Hoval has ceased manufacturing at its UK branch in Newark, with the loss of 13 jobs.

Hoval’s Newark base specialised in industrial commercial boilers, specifically steel shell boilers of up to 1,500kw.

Managing director Ross Halley said that processes had been followed and the plant was now closed due to declining demand for the products made here in Newark, especially with the rising demand for air source heat pumps.

“We made specialist products here for the UK market, but the declining demand for the products due to new technologies and the economy in general has factored into this, demand has dropped,” he said.

“It is a very sad day that we’re having to do this.”
