In pictures: Memories of the Robin Hood Hotel in Newark

Memories and photographs of the glory days of Newark’s former Robin Hood Hotel are being sought by Nottinghamshire Building Preservation Trust.

In its heyday the 37-bedroom hotel on Lombard Street was one of the finest places in Newark to stay and dine and was a popular venue for wedding receptions and Christmas and birthday parties.

Its restaurant was one of the best in town and was often fully booked, especially for the Sunday carvery.

The hotel had a spacious lounge, bar areas on the ground floor and a ballroom upstairs.

From 1986 until its closure in 1999 it had seven owners. It was then plagued by vandals, and the modern part of the building was demolished to make way for the Asda development.

The vice-chairman of the preservation trust, businessman Mr Peter Duncan, who is also a Newark and Sherwood district and Newark town councillor, said they wanted to put together an archive of people’s anecdotes and photographs to record the history of the building.

It is hoped in the future they could be used for an exhibition.

“There must be many people who have pictures of the exterior and the interior of the hotel and of the many events that were held there,” Mr Duncan said.

“At some point it would be good to mount an exhibition to tell the story from its beginning.

“I feel that would allow people to understand and appreciate the rich history of the building and what it could become once again.”

Newark Civic Trust is among the groups that have been asked by Mr Duncan for pictures and stories of the venue.

Anyone with photographs or memories of the Robin Hood Hotel can send them to the Advertiser, Units 9 and 10, Halifax Court, Fernwood Business Park, Balderton, NG24 3JP, or email to l.millard@newarkadvertiser.co.uk
