Newark and Ollerton leisure centre gyms to benefit from new equipment and refurbishment after £700,000 investment from Newark and Sherwood District Council

A £700,000 leisure centre gym refurbishment scheme is to provide state-of-the-art fitness equipment for residents.

As part of its on-going refurbishment programme, Newark and Sherwood District Council has provided £700,000 to upgrade the fitness suites at three of its Active4Today-operated leisure centres — Newark Sports and Fitness Centre, Ollerton’s Dukeries Leisure Centre, and Blidworth Leisure Centre.

The refurbishment will see some remodelling at the centres to create larger fitness suites, which will also have a ‘fresh new look’, as well as new equipment.

Newark Sports and Fitness Centre’s fitness suite is to be refurbished in November.

New equipment will include athlete-quality self-powered curved treadmills, air bikes, SkiErgs, new static bikes, cross trainers, and powermill climbers, and will be able to cater for every work-out from high-performance workouts to low impact activity.

Susan Crosby, portfolio holder for health and wellbeing at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “Regular exercise is one of the best things residents can do to stay healthy and happy. Exercise has often been linked with good mental health as well as the physical benefits it brings.

“To me it makes sense for us, as a district council, to do everything we can to ensure access to wonderful facilities like these are available to our residents.”

Each refurbishment is expected to take a week, during which times each fitness suite will be closed.

It will start with Dukeries Leisure Centre from Monday, October 21 to Sunday, October 27, followed by Blidworth Leisure Centre from Monday, October 28 to Sunday, November 3, and then on to Newark Sports and Fitness Centre from Monday, November 4 to Sunday, November 10.

During the works, swimming, fitness classes, and other activities will continue at the sites, and members are able to to use any of Active4Today’s four leisure centre’s facilities.

Andy Freeman, chairman of the board of Active4Today added: “As fitness trends change, technology also moves on at a fast pace and this new equipment is fully digital enabled, linking to the Life Fitness online coaching platform. This is a great addition for our customers.

“Our customers are important to us, so we want to make sure that they experience as little inconvenience as possible whilst this impressive upgrade takes place, but we know when customers return, they’ll see that it’s been worth it. The fitness suites are going to be amazing.

“The works will only affect the fitness suites, so we hope that members will continue to use our swimming, fitness classes, off-peak racquet sports and blast fitness sessions to stay active. And, of course, our members can still use any of our leisure centres as part of their membership at Active4Today.”
