Jill, Matt and Ben Pindar completed the Prudential Ride London.
A family team have completed a gruelling fundraising bike challenge to mark the end of their mum's breast cancer treatment.
On Sunday, Jill Pindar, of North Muskham, and her sons Matt and Ben, completed the 100-mile cycling challenge Prudential Ride London to mark the end of Jill’s breast cancer treatment.
In November 2017, Jill found a lump in her breast. A tissue biopsy revealed that the lump was triple negative stage two, grade three breast cancer. Jill began chemotherapy in January 2018, followed by a lumpectomy, reconstruction and radiotherapy.
Wanting to do mark the milestone, Jill entered the ballot and when she found out she’d been successful, Matt and Ben insisted on being by her side, just as they’d done throughout her treatment.
Matt said: “Crossing the finish line after a massive effort with my mum and brother by my side was definitely the highlight for me. It felt great knowing I have such a close family and that we have achieved something like this together.”
The three were joined by 314 other riders who were all raising money for Breast Cancer Care and Breast Cancer Now.
On completing the race, Jill said: “The ride was amazing. The start was quite overwhelming but as we made our way to the start line we met some other Breast Cancer Care and Breast Cancer Now riders, one of which I ended up cycling with for quite a while.
“We whizzed through the empty city streets, pointing out the sites just after sunrise which was surreal and then arrived in Surrey in no time.
"The support from those lining the route and the cheer points was brilliant - I felt like a celebrity.
"By the time we headed back into London in the early afternoon, there were so many people lining the roads. I got quite emotional as members of the public picked out our pink tops and cheered us on.
"Reaching The Mall and then riding down it was truly breath-taking and seeing the Queen Victoria memorial ahead was the perfect ending.”
Ben said: “The constant support and cheers for breast cancer fundraisers around the whole course was very humbling. It has affected so many people and everyone recognises the pink. It's great to see just how many people care about the cause.
“Thinking about the physical and emotional pain mum experienced during her breast cancer treatment was all we needed to get us through the tougher parts of the course.”
Jill ended: “The elation of finishing the challenge with both my sons by my side was very emotional. We tagged ourselves ‘Team Pindar’ and that’s just what we were - a team.
"When I was low on energy the boys were encouraging. I kept reminding myself of why I am competing and what the money would achieve - more research and support for everyone affected by breast cancer.
“The boys looked after me throughout. My sons have stood by me through a great deal over the last 18 months and this was no exception.
“In some way I also see this as a conclusion. We have been focussed and looking ahead to this day through much of my treatment and recovery. A fitting finale and now onto the next chapter.”
