Kelham Hall will now be a 103-bedroom hotel — an increase on the original 71 bedrooms

An additional 32 bedrooms will be available at a soon-to-be created luxury hotel.

The owner of Kelham Hall, Jonathan Pass, has applied to turn the 19th century building into a luxury 103-bedroom hotel, complete with a spa and restaurant — an increase on the original 71 bedrooms proposed.

Averham, Kelham and Staythorpe Parish Council objected to the latest planning application, saying the additional bed spaces created were a departure from the original concept of a luxury hotel and were concerned as to the capability of the existing services infrastructure to cope with the overall number of rooms now proposed.

Members had also raised concerns over noise levels and traffic volumes.

But the new application was approved at a meeting on Tuesday of Newark and Sherwood District Council’s planning committee.

Committee member Mr Michael Brown spoke in favour of the application at the meeting.

He said: “The increase in rooms will increase jobs and revenue, and it can really benefit tourism in Newark and the surrounding areas.

“I am more than happy to approve this.”

Mr Laurence Goff agreed that having the extra rooms would be good for tourism and hopefully encourage more people to visit the town.

However, the application was met with some trepidation from some members.

Mrs Maureen Dobson said that she was concerned that having too many bedrooms would spoil the hotel and agreed with the parish council:

"This hotel was going to be something special and now I just think its terrible, especially getting rid of the bridal suite and it's over the top.

"I thought having 70 bedrooms was pretty good but now it's being spoiled."
