Female great spotted woodpecker pictured at Nottingham Trent University’s Brackenhurst Campus

A female great spotted woodpecker has been pictured at a university campus in Southwell.

The woodpecker, which was found to have been ringed in the same location in 2020, is one of 20 to have been ringed at Nottingham Trent University’s Brackenhurst Campus — home to the university’s School of Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences — in the last 15 years.

NTU works with the British Trust for Ornithology’s South Notts Ringing Group to ring wild birds so that their populations, movements and breeding success can be monitored.

The birds are often found close to their original ringing site.
