Let flowers bloom
WITH recent restrictions, it seems those responsible for mowing and manicuring our roadside verges and open spaces have, in places, given nature an opportunity to show us what it is capable of if we give it time and space to breathe (pictured).
Many will have noticed the abundance of beautiful wild flowers on your daily walks — the appreciative insect population certainly has.
We are in such a rush to get back to normal that I hope we don’t forget the potential hidden under the surface if we just let it be.
Yes, we need to think about road safety in very specific areas but, in the main, all this regular mowing is a waste of taxpayers’ money and a criminal destruction of our native flora and fauna.
This is one area where it would be much better if we didn’t return to business as usual.
Councils and private landowners have the opportunity to make a real difference and go beyond fine words and promises. Let’s see if they deliver. — HELEN, DUNNE, Southwell, via email.
