Matthew's chutney was judged by over 500 critics, chefs, buyers and retailers within the Good Taste Awards.

"I have been making chutneys like this for years and giving them out as birthday and Christmas gifts. Never did I believe I would ever sell them, nor win an award for them," said Matthew Slaughter, managing director of Matthew's Preserves.

"I started my company this year to coincide with the awards, so I could enter my spicy pineapple chutney, therefore I am quite simply overwhelmed with the three stars."

His prize preserve was given 3-stars — the highest award — created to combine exotic tastes of the Caribbean with spices from India.

The chutney was among only 208 of the 12,772 products sent from over 100 countries to receive the 3-star Good Taste Awards honour — setting it far apart from other products.

Matthew said: "As a new company, I plan to use my three stars to get my products into local, regional and possibly nationwide shops. Not only have I received this important accolade, I have received two nominations for Golden Fork Awards, one for my chutney, the other for my business."
