A town councillor described as a faithful servant to the people of Newark has resigned due to ill health.

Councillors at this week's meeting of Newark Town Council praised the service that Mr John Clark, who represented the Devon Ward, gave to the town.

The Mayor of Newark, Mr Tony Roberts, said: "It was with some sadness and regret that I received the resignation of councillor John Clark.

"He has been a faithful servant to this town, a Newarker through and through, with the town always in his heart.

"He has been unwell for some time and feels in all honesty he can no longer represent his ward because he is not well enough."

The council leader, Mr Max Cope, said: "John has served this town commendably over the years, and was a very supportive deputy mayor to me.

"I wish him well as he seeks better health."
