Long Bennington residents angry at amount of rubbish and human waste left behind by lorry drivers using village overnight instead of lorry park Gonerby Moor Services, near Grantham
Residents are angry at the amount of rubbish and human waste being left behind by lorry drivers who park in their village overnight.
According to residents in Long Bennington, between 12 and 21 lorries park in the village every night instead of using the lorry park at Gonerby Moor Services, near Grantham.
Mr Paul Wood, who represents Long Bennington on South Kesteven District Council, wants to prevent overnight parking in the village.
He said: “The lorries park there because they do not want to pay the charge of a proper lorry park at Great Gonerby. However, Long Bennington is on a public road with no toilet facilities, which inevitably causes problems including vast amounts of litter, rubbish and even human waste.
“South Kesteven District Council has been extremely helpful and has done a great job clearing up the mess but Lincolnshire County Council needs to issue a traffic regulation order to prevent overnight parking in the village.
“I want to stop overnight parking generally in the village and not force lorries from the north of the village into other areas of Long Bennington.”
The district council cabinet member for environment Dr Peter Moseley said: “Because of the excess rubbish left by the additional traffic, there is more than can be dealt with on our scheduled cleans for laybys and verges.
“We, therefore, provide an additional service from our specialist cleaning crews to keep the area up to the high standards our residents have come to expect and to maintain our Higher Street Standard.
“We are considering using our enforcement team in this area but ultimately would like a resolution to the issue of lorries parking in this area.”
Leanne Gibson, the county council’s programme leader for minor works and traffic, said: “We are aware of the concerns about HGVs parking overnight in Long Bennington.
“We have looked at what can be done to tackle this issue and we will be presenting our initial findings to the parish council on Friday at a meeting organised with local county councillor Alexander Maughan, who is supporting the local community in finding a solution.”
