Magnus Academy expresses delight at GCSE results
Staff at the Magnus Church of England Academy in Newark expressed their delight on GCSE results’ day with 58% of students having achieved a grade 4 or higher in both maths and English.
Garth Freeman, assistant principal for data and assessment, said: “We are delighted with this year’s exams results.
“The hard work and dedication that the students have put in this year has really paid off.
58% of the students that have attended the Magnus Academy have achieved a grade 4 or higher in both maths and English, this is up on last year’s results.
“There has been outstanding results in many subjects this year but particularly the subjects classed as STEM have stood out.
“The students studying physics have achieved an 82% pass rate. 60% of students studying maths have achieved a grade 4 or higher. 73% of the students studying design & technology achieved a grade 4 and this is the same for the students studying art.
“Finally achievement was also high in the languages and within the performing arts with 100% of students achieving a pass grade in the latter”.
Notable student performances included Esme Potter, 16, who achieved an 8 in English literature, 5 in religious studies, 7 in history, 5 in biology, 5 in chemistry, 6 in physics, 6 in design and technology, 5 in Spanish,m 6 in English language, 8 in maths and 5 in further maths.
Esme will use those grades to return to Magnus where she will study four A-levels – maths, further maths, history and criminology.
“My results are about what I expected,” beamed Esme.
“I’m very happy with history because I love the subject.
“I’ve enjoyed my studies. The teachers made everything seem easy and focused us on what needed to focus on really well.”
Pals Faith Middleton, Jasmine Handley and Zofia Rogala were delighted with their results.
Zofia said: “It’s fantastic. I expected to get these but you never know for sure.”
Jasmine said, with high pass grades down this year nationally, she felt covid had impacted what had been achieved by students everywhere.
“Covid has had an effect on us,” she said. “It was tough, but manageable.”
Principal Anna Martin said: "Since year 7 this year group have been a truly exceptional group of students and this is reflected in the results they have received today.
“They have persevered to achieve some excellent results, particularly in STEM subjects, including English, maths, technology and physics.
“We are delighted that so many are coming back to study A-levels with us and have record numbers joining us this year.
“We are always proud of our students, and today we celebrate the success of a truly fantastic cohort.
“We wish them all the very best for their next steps, and want to remind them that they will always be part of the Magnus family and hope they will keep in touch."
