Man in court after a handbag snatched

Police have charged a man with robbery after a woman’s bag was stolen in Newark at the weekend.

Police say a 64-year-old Newark woman was walking through Albert Street at around 11.45pm on Friday when a man pushed her to the floor and took her handbag.

Officers conducted a thorough search of the area and Matthew Sheldon, 20, of no fixed abode, was subsequently arrested and charged with robbery.

He appeared before Newark Magistrates' Court today where he was released on bail. He will next appear at Nottingham Crown Court on February 21.
