Man jailed at Nottinghamshire Crown Court following a hammer attack and shotgun incident in Newark

A man has been jailed following a hammer attack and shotgun incident in Newark.

Matthew Harverye, formerly of West Bridgford, has been sentenced to seven years and ten months in prison after attacking a man with a hammer and threatening him with a fire arm.

The 28-year-old appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday (February 22) following an 11-day trial where he was convicted of possession of a firearm, actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

Harveyre turned up at a house in Newark and threatened the occupant with a shot gun in March 2018.

In a separate incident on 26 August 2018, he attacked a man with a hammer in the Sneinton Dale area causing a fractured finger and puncture wound to his arm.

Following the trial, Leona Bailey, 24, from Newark, was also convicted of possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and given a two-year suspended sentence after the investigation found that she attended the Newark address with Harveyre when he threatened the man with the shot gun.

They were both given a restraining order.

Detective Constable Richard Kinsey said "Harveyre is a dangerous individual who takes pleasure in threatening and inflicting violence on others.

"We're pleased that he's now serving a lengthy sentence behind bars and won't be able to inflict harm on others in this way."
