The emergency services were called to the Trent at Fiskerton on Tuesday afternoon to a man who was refusing to come out of the river.

The incident happened near to The Bromley Arms, Fiskerton.

When firefighters, in four engines and a flood response vehicle, arrived at the scene after receiving the call at 3.01pm, the fully-clothed man was described as marooned half on a bridge support and half in the water.

Watch Manager Graham Picker, of Newark Fire Station, said: "We're not sure of the circumstances of how he came to be in there, whether he jumped or whether he fell.

"He was initially uncooperative but then became cooperative."

Firecrews and paramedics took to the water in a boat with colleagues stationed strategically down river in case the man floated away on the currents of a river swollen by days of heavy rain.

After the man became cooperative, he allowed firefighters to place him in a stretcher basket and he was lifted on to the shore.

The 37-year-old man was said to be conscious and breathing and he was taken to King's Mill Hospital, Sutton-in-Ashfield for assessment.
