A man who died in a six-vehicle crash on the A1 at Newark has been named as Ian Newell, of Grantham.

The 52-year-old, who was the driver of one of the vehicles involved, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash happened at 7.55am last Thursday (March 9) on the northbound carriageway, a few hundred metres from the turn-off for the A46.

Mr Newell worked for Lincolnshire County Council, in the role of business and public protection manager. He had worked at the authority since 1993.

Sara Barry, head of safer communities at the county council, said: "Ian was an absolute pleasure to work with and was a dedicated and long-serving member of our Trading Standards team.

"He was energetic, hard-working and the ultimate professional. But more than that, he was a kind and caring man, an asset to the team and a joy to be around.

"He had worked in Trading Standards for over 30 years and was absolutely committed to protecting the public. The team is deeply saddened by this and our thoughts are with his family."

'Devastated'

He was also a familiar face at Grantham Athletic Club, supporting his daughters in their athletics. Mr Bill Lord, chairman of Grantham Athletic Club, said: "The club was devastated to hear of the death of Ian, who was a great supporter of the club and came to all matches.

“He would volunteer to help whether it be measuring the shot put or providing the follow-up vehicle at the Newton's Fraction Half-marathon. Our condolences go to his family.”

Another man, the driver of one of two lorries involved in the crash, was cut free from his vehicle and airlifted to Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

A woman was taken to hospital by ambulance and three other men were treated for injuries at the scene. Their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening or life-altering.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the collision, or who has dash cam footage, to call them on 101.
