Net of poppies cascades Balderton’s St Giles’ Church for Remembrance and centenary Royal British Legion

The bells of Balderton’s St Giles’ Church rang out after a huge net of poppies was strung from its tower.

The poppies were all knitted, crocheted or felt and are a tribute to both Remembrance and the centenary of the Royal British Legion.

Unhappily, it coincided the disbanding of the legion’s Balderton branch, which has amalgamated with Newark, through a lack of participating members.

Members of the congregation at St Giles’ Church, Balderton, were asked to make the red or purple poppies but the initiative resonated with the wider community to a huge extent.

The Rev Louise Holliday said: “It’s the most amazing community effort.”

Balderton legion branch member Alan Ellerby said: “It’s absolutely marvellous and will be there when we parade as a branch for the last time.”
