Mayor's Poppy Appeal launched in Newark Market Place
A TARGET of £50,000 was set as the Mayor's Poppy Appeal was launched in Newark Market Place on Tuesday.
Last year, the town raised £42,000.
Throughout the district there will be 450 collections set up in places such as supermarkets and schools.
Special kids packs have been created and the Mayor's Poppy Appeal is working with 14 schools.
The chairman of the Newark branch of the Royal British Legion, former Wing Commander Mr John Rush, said: "Without the generous support from the town council we would be unable to do this. This year we are aiming for nothing less than £50,000."
More volunteers are needed for this year's appeal.
"Even if you help out for one hour your time will be appreciated and it can make a big difference," said Mr Rush.
Newark Mayor Mr Tony Roberts said: "On this special year we should mark the contribution that service men in this town have made in the fight for freedom and peace."
