Wellow maypole celebrations to return for jubilee with lots of traditional fun this weekend

Back after an absence of two years, Wellow Maypole Day will this year be part of the national platinum jubilee celebrations.

The unique village tradition will be held on Saturday, June 4, with maypole dancing, Punch and Judy and live music.

The family friendly event is centred around the village's spectacular 17-metre-high maypole on the village green.

Following a children's procession from St. Swithin's church, the new May Queen will be crowned.

Ellie Wilson, the village's next May Queen, has been patiently waiting since winning the village’s secret ballot in November 2019. She will be crowned by the retiring May Queen Lucy Hollingworth, who has reigned since May 2019.

After this, the children will perform a variety of intricate maypole dances they have learnt in the weeks leading up to the big day. Wellow Jack and his accompanying Bogies will be providing fun and mischief.

The Maypole celebrations have been a feature of Wellow village life for well over a hundred years, and plenty is on offer for everyone to get involved with.

Highlights include the circus skills of High Voltage Events, live music provided by singer Jeremy James from Manchester, Morris dancing by Rattlejag, a traditional Punch and Judy and children's swing boats, and lots of stalls, crafts and games as well to keep everyone amused.

Hot and cold food is available on the green throughout the afternoon, including home-made cakes from a renowned cake stall outside the village hall.

The celebrations will run from 12pm to 5pm, with free admission. Parking is available at Wellow Dam and Wellow House School.
