Photographs of Newark’s outdoor swimming pool from the Fifties to the Seventies
For many Newarkers, summer brings back memories of days spent at the town’s outdoor pool.
Situated on Sherwood Avenue, it was open throughout the summer months for people to enjoy a refreshing cool down.
Hundreds of people would regularly flock to the pool. In fact, 50 years ago this week, the Newark area was basking in a heatwave and more than 1,500 people cooled off at the pool.
But as well as providing a much-loved leisure space, it also hosted galas and competitions for more competitive swimmers.
Sadly, the pool is no more and is now home to the skatepark and basketball area in the Sherwood Avenue Park.
But we have delved into our photographic archive to choose some pictures of people enjoying the water in its heydays of the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies.
Do they bring back any memories for you?
