Newark people share their memories of Queen Elizabeth II

People in Newark today paid tribute to the Queen following her death yesterday, and promised to always remember her.

Many went to Newark Parish Church to sign the book of condolence, light a candle and say a prayer in her memory.

All those who the Advertiser spoke to shared one thought — The Queen will be missed.

"I was only five years old the day of the coronation, but my parents had bought a television, a 14ins black and white," said Tony Roberts, the church warden.

"A lot of our neighbours sitting in our sitting room looking at a very very poor quality picture, so I will forever have that memory in my mind."

From the Royal Market to the parish church, people shared their respects to the Queen, named by many "grandmother of the people."

"From the time I was about seven, she's been there and you think it's going to last forever, but it doesn't," said Newark resident Margaret Payne.

"I liked the Queen very much, I grew up not far from London so she was somewhat always present."

"I feel sad because I really liked her," said Danielle Barnnet.

"We used to watch the Christmas speeches sometimes and even that I'm not a major fan of royalty, she will be dearly missed," said Danielle's mum, Tracy Munn.

"I remember her, I'm sure it was 1952, when she drove through the country to Scotland to visit for the first time as a Queen, I remember that," said Tom Johnston.

"It's just a very sad day, even that the Queen was old and we knew she was going to die one day, but it's such a shock it has happened," said Heather Waller.

"She was just a wonderful Queen."
