Nottinghamshire County Council to invest £9 million into Newark and Sherwood buses with Bus Service Improvement Plan
Millions of pounds are set to be invested to support bus services across Nottinghamshire, including 13 bus services in Newark and Sherwood.
Nottinghamshire County Council will invest £9 million with the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) into the public transport services which may otherwise have been reduced or withdrawn.
Some of the services to receive the cash injection include Marshall’s 37 and 38 Newark to Retford and the Central Connect 90 Newark to Nottingham service.
The 37 and 38 service replaced the 339-bus service in December 2024 and now offers a new direct link between Newark and Retford, benefiting passengers in Cromwell, Grassthorpe, Low Marnham, and Normanton on Trent.
Central Connect’s 90 and 92 services has also seen improvements, offering more connections and increased frequency, partly funded by the county council.
Other bus services in Newark that benefit from county council funding include:
1N Balderton to Coddington
2N Lincoln Road to Hawtonville
14 Mansfield to Kirton
15 Mansfield to Walesby
24 Grantham to Newark
300 Newark to Lowdham
28 Newark to Mansfield
354 Bingham to Newark
367 Newark to Harby
These routes receive either full or joint funding from the council, enhancing their frequency and adjusting routes to better serve local communities.
Sam Smith, leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “Nottinghamshire is ranked as the best county area for buses in the country based on current Transport Focus data.
“It is no surprise really that our buses are ranked as the best county area as your county council is committed to making sure that every community has a reliable bus service.
“In Newark, we are really proud of our funding for local bus services, and it is important to remember that to do this, we work closely with local bus operators.
Neil Clarke, Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment at Nottinghamshire County Council, added: “In Nottinghamshire we have a great reputation for public transport, including a 90% passenger satisfaction rating.
“We spend more than £9 million a year supporting local bus services and this is a significant investment to ensure that Nottinghamshire is well connected by bus.
“Our support for bus services is particularly important because without it we know that many services would be reduced or withdrawn.
“We have worked closely with bus operators for a number of years now as part of our Bus Service Improvement Plan and this won’t change as we know that there is more work to do when it comes to bus service improvements and making sure that every community has access to a reliable and affordable service.”
