Minster hosts week of learning

About 1,700 pupils from across Nottinghamshire took part in Southwell Minster’s Time Travelling week-long educational programme that finished on Friday.

Pupils from Newark’s William Gladstone Church of England primary and the Mount Church of England primary were among those who took part in various activities.

The project is held at the minster each year with 350 pupils a day taking part in activities based on Christianity, worship, buildings and faith in action.

The children are spilt into groups and take part in activities run by volunteers.

Pupils from the two Newark schools explored the carvings on the Victorian pews with torches and looked at the King James Bible in the minster’s State Chamber.

They also listened to a welcome talk by the Bishop of Sherwood, the Right Rev Tony Porter.

Mr Peter Price, organist at the minster, has played to pupils during Time Travelling since the programme was launched in 1995.

Diana Ives, education officer at the minster, said: “Time Travelling allows pupils to learn about religious studies, and they can learn about the minster and a bit of history at the same time.

“The feedback we receive from schools is always positive and it has been another brilliant week this year.”
