Reader's letter: More memories

I refer to the letter from Professor Sir Michael Bond (Memories Stirred Of Bombing Raid, News Views, March 23) about the Ransome and Marles bombing.

I was a pupil at Victoria Street Infants’ school at the time but was at home in Eldon Street, about five minutes walk from the school.

Our kitchen window looked towards the town and my mother and sister and myself saw the German plane fly over between James Hole Brewery and London Road while it was circulating round to bomb the factory.

I was seven at the time and it was a frightening feeling when the bombs dropped.

My father was working at Abbots boiler factory next to Ransomes and he told me they jumped into the boiler casings for protection.

Another time, I was just back in my street from school when the German plane that attacked the Midland station along the Trent flew over my street when he was making his approach.

A neighbour took me in for safety when she heard the bombs.

To go full circle, when I came out of the RAF in 1955 and got a job at Ransomes I worked in the same office as Mr Emmerson, who helped with the injured at the time of the raid.

Memories of the past. — KEN DAUBNEY, Newark.
