The petition gained traction last night after Prime Minister, Theresa May, told the British public that she was on their side.

Britain will leave the EU on March 29 unless Theresa May agrees an extension of Article 50.

The Prime Minister is hoping to put her deal back to the Commons for a third time next week.

The petition was started by Margaret Georgiadou.

She wrote on the petition page: "The government repeatedly claims exiting the EU is 'the will of the people'.

"We need to put a stop to this claim by proving the strength of public support now, for remaining in the EU.

"A People's Vote may not happen - so vote now."
