Newark Half-marathon : More than 1,000 runners take part in 13-mile course

Hot weather did not stop Kevin Seaward from setting a new course record at the Newark Half-marathon.

The weather provided tough conditions for the 1,097 runners taking part in today's race.

Kevin, 32, of Cardiff AC, ran the 13.1-mile course in 1 hour 4 minutes 30 seconds, shaving just over six minutes off the best time.

Kevin, who is based in Loughborough but is originally from Belfast, ran the Rio 2016 Olympic marathon for Ireland and was using the Newark Half-marathon as a warm up for next month's Berlin Marathon.

He said it was perfect preparation for marathons in the months ahead.

Second was Steven Bayton, 26, of Hallamshire Harriers, who finished around two minutes behind Kevin.

Steven, of Sheffield, was also warming up for Berlin and said: "The winner set off like a train. I couldn't catch him."

Third was experienced half-marathon runner Mike Kallenberg, 26, of Cardiff AC.

First lady was 41-year-old Julie Briscoe, of Wakefield AC, and the first local runner home was Tom Marshall, of Newark Striders.

He was followed closely by Thomas Hubbard, of Newark Athletic Club.

The runners set off from Hawton Road at 10am and made their way through East Stoke towards Eden Hall Day Spa, the event’s main sponsor.

They then headed through Elston towards Thorpe and then headed back to Hawton.

The final stretch was along Hawton Road, Valley Prospect and around Devon Park towards the finish line.
