Museum of Timekeeping to present its own Proms in the Park this summer

The Museum of Timekeeping is set to present a ground-breaking Proms in the Park event in July for locals to enjoy the Newark and Sherwood concert band.

Customers are to bring their own chairs to the beautiful 12-acre grounds of the 200-year-old building as part of an event celebrating the musical talent of Newark at Upton Hall.

The Proms which is the latest event representing the museum's aim to attract and embrace a wider audience following a recent event, which brought many people together in period costume to celebrate the 200th birthday of Queen Victoria at the museum's Victorian Times event.

"This is another ambitious undertaking as as we embark on our plan to attract many more visitors to enjoy the area, the hall and our incredible collection," said Viscount Alan Midleton, museum curator and charity chairman.

It will commence on July 13 and includes musical sessions from the award winning orchestra who will be playing favourites like Land of Hope and Glory, Sailors Hornpipe and Rule Britannia as visitors sit back and enjoy the food on site as well as a licensed gin and cocktail bar on offer.

During the visit ticket holders can also explore the grounds and grand rooms of the Grade II listed building that houses the museum and discover more about the rich history of the British Horological Institute and its members, who have promoted the study and practice of clock and watchmaking since 1858.

Exhibits include a 17th century working lantern clock, the sounds of Britain’s first three Speaking Clocks - including the voice of the original 1936 machine - and hundreds of different timekeepers from tiny watches to enormous church clock mechanisms which will no doubt be of interest to many audiences who visit the museum.
