Naked joggers seen on the run near roundabout
People travelling along a busy Newark road might be greeted with an unusual sight — naked joggers.
An eyewitness told the Advertiser two young men were running naked along Great North Road near the Cattlemarket roundabout.
The witness, who did not want to be named, saw the joggers as he was heading along Great North Road towards the Cattlemarket roundabout on a Saturday evening last month.
“There were two young men jogging towards the big roundabout,” he said.
“They were in their early 20s and they were laughing and joking with cars pipping away.
“My friend said: ‘They have got one of those suits on’ and I said: ‘They haven’t.’
“My sister said: ‘Go round the roundabout and have another look’ and they were jogging on the spot waiting for a gap in the traffic so they could cross.”
The eyewitness said someone who lived on Kelham Road had reported seeing the joggers on a regular basis.
“We couldn’t believe our eyes,” he said.
“It was a cold day — whether they did it for a bet or a dare, I don’t know.
“I have never seen anything like that before.
“We have been telling everybody about it.”
Were you one of the joggers?
The witness said he was not offended by the display but could understand why some people might be.
“I am a bit too long in the tooth,” he said.
“I grew up in the 1960s when there was a lot of liberation.”
There is no specific law that prohibits being naked in public, however, it could be considered a public order offence.
It could be considered to be outraging public decency, which prohibits any act of a lewd, obscene or disgusting nature.
There is also a by-law in Newark and Sherwood that bans any indecent show in any street or public place.
A police officer would be unlikely to make an arrest unless someone had been caused alarm or distress, or if there was a sexual context.
A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said they had received no reports about naked joggers.
