Bodycare Plc to replace closed Superdrug on Stodman Street, Newark, in around three month's time
Superdrug on Stodman Street, Newark, closed its doors for good on Sunday, but the now-empty unit is soon to be filled again.
The store is to be replaced by beauty brand Bodycare Plc, which has 130 stores nationally, and offers a wide range of products similar to its predecessor.
Bodycare's company spokesman said excluding any unforeseen implications that could arise in the coming weeks, the store should be open within the next three months.
"It will be around six to seven weeks from now until we are given the keys and another six to seven weeks before the re-fit is done and we can open," they said.
It comes after Superdrug's closure was branded another blow to Newark town centre, after the exit of Marks and Spencer and the closure of Bonmarche in February.
At the time of its closure, Kerri McGarrigle, chairman of Newark Business Club, said she was worried for the future of the town centre.
“The fact there are many empty shop units is not great for tourism in the town, despite it thriving a few years ago — it’s just a bad look,” she said.
However, she acknowledged M&S coming back in the form of a foodhall on Northgate next year was exciting, and said it would hopefully connect the town up to the retail park.
When contacted by the Advertiser, Superdrug refused to say how many people its Newark store employed and how many of these jobs were at risk.
A spokesman said: “We can confirm that the Newark Superdrug store will be closing in February 2020.
"We would like to thank our customers for their continued support and advise that they may continue to shop Superdrug’s wide range of health and beauty products at the nearby Grantham store.”
